ANNE AUDREY JOINER
November 12, 1934 – August 13, 2011
Anne was born on November 12, 1934 in Bluefield, WV to Casper and Lottie Belle Briggs. She attended Virginia State College where she majored in Library Science and became a Librarian at her old high school, Park Central High. It was through a student there, Patricia Joiner that Anne met her future husband, Abe Joiner, to whom she has been married for forty-seven years. Together, their union produced two sons, Jerome and Steven.
Anne worked at the nursery complex and taught Kindergarten on Lowry Air Force Base, and then taught 6th grade at West Middle School in the Aurora Public School District. She retired in 2001 after 16 years of dedicated service. In addition to the many charities and organizations that were dear to her heart, (she was a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and Links Inc.) Anne gave of herself whenever possible. She loved to make people happy and to take care of others. Anne never met a stranger….she became friends with people instantly, always wanting to put a smile on someone's face. She was like a mom to many of Jerome and Steve's friends while growing up, and later became everyone's 'Grandma.' She absolutely loved to spoil her grandchildren and she would say, "It's what Grandma's are supposed to do, and it's okay because they aren't rotten!" She adored her grandkids and loved to sing their praises whenever she had the chance…which was all the time!
Anne is survived by her husband, Abe, her two sons, Jerome and Steven (Jessica), her sister, Theodosia Briggs, her Aunt Ollie Finley, her cousin Francis Finley, her honorary grandchild Tawni Gurney and her three wonderful grandchildren: Akaysha, Zandreya, and Tremayne.
