I was born on December 2, 1931 on a farm. It was my mother's birthday. The birth certificate simply read "Baby Boy Schlager". My parents christened me Albert, but I was quickly nicknamed "Aldee" and later in life, I went by Al. There were 5 boys and 1 girl. I am the last of this family....
Al was raised for the first 18 years of his life on a farm near Scottsbluff, Nebraska. As a boy, he rode his favorite horse "Tony" to country school. Later he attended Scottsbluff High School in town. When asked what activities he did as a boy, he stated that after school we came home and did chores.
He met the love of his life, Helen at the age of 16. They were married 2 years later and so began 72 years being side by side. They moved to the big city, Denver, to begin jobs other than farming. Without family nearby, they learned to rely on each other. They raised 2 daughters, Sandy and Jody, and eventually expanded their family with sons-in-law, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Al worked for 40 years in trucking, first delivering canisters of film to movie theaters. When the film industry went digital, he started his own business "Profit by Air" and delivered all things music-related, records, tapes, and CD's
During his life, he did manage to acquire a few hobbies other than chores. On Saturday nights he and Helen would meet friends to play pool or cards. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping with his family, and traveling to faraway locations with Helen.
He was a faithful member of Christ the King Lutheran Church for 66 years and helped with building maintenance and mowing the lawn for many years.
He loved the lottery and, from his easy chair, would watch his numbers every Saturday night. He only hit it big twice - the day he met Helen and the day he returned to her.
A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, January, 28th at 11am at Christ the King Lutheran Church, 2300 S. Patton Ct, Denver, CO 80219
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Christ the King Lutheran Church.
