Alfred Duane Schmidt Jr. was an adored Father and Grandfather, who after 70 years of life, passed away while enjoying one of his biggest passions, cycling, on Saturday, March 9, 2019.
He was born to Evelyn and Alfred Schmidt on November 23, 1948, in Miami, Fl. Alfred graduated from Miami Palmetto Senior High School and received a BA in Mechanical and Nuclear engineering from Auburn University in 1972.
In 1994, in Puerto Rico, he met his wife Cristina. On their first date, they had a language translator present. They never let the language barrier stand in their way. While apart due to Alfred's work, they kept their relationship alive by writing letters to each other for months. He then traveled all the way to Venezuela in order to know her better, solidifying their love. He married Cristina Schmidt on July 4, 1995, and they lived together in Dorado, Puerto Rico for 11 years, before relocating to Aurora Colorado in 2007.
Before meeting Cristina, Alfred Schmidt was married to Mary Anne, in whom he had Michael and Joan Schmidt.
Alfred's spirit is carried on by four children, Michael Schmidt, Joan Schmidt, Cristine Schmidt, and Cristopher Schmidt. He is survived by his three beloved grandchildren, Elliott, Evanell, and Genevieve. His children know him as a quiet, yet wise Father who always knew the answers to life's issues. He was the rock and foundation on which his family depended on. He had wise words for every one of life's curve balls and freely shared them with his children. He showered love and adoration on his four Children and three Grandchildren.
He was a man of Faith and attended Smoky Hill Vineyard Church. He was an active member of Fight Club which is part of Caleb's Heart Ministries. He was also a board member of Global One80 which is a ministry modeled around the life of Jesus, as a servant leader. Their mission is to "empower leaders who are committed to implementing initiatives that will transform communities, one life at a time."
Alfred excelled in his career as a chemical, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, and power industry engineer. In his younger years, he obtained his pilot's license, bought a small airplane, and flew his two older children, Michael and Joan around in the sunny Florida skies. After moving to Colorado, he continued his love of cycling and rode every chance he could. He would cycle to work even in the most frigid Colorado weather. Like flying, he found freedom while riding over the breezy Colorado trails. He was constantly challenging himself. At age 68, he cycled Mount Evans, proving that no matter his age, he could accomplish what many could not.
He had a vast amount of love to share and enjoyed the simple things in life, including his animals. While he loved Nina and Ragazza, he looked forward to waking up every morning and greeting his African Cichlid fish with a "good morning" and a fresh cup of coffee. It was the perfect start to his day before biking to work.
While Alfred is no longer physically here, his legacy lives on, within his Children, Grandchildren and in his Wife Cristina, who was his partner in life, best friend and soulmate.
