Alice Hoskins Holmes was born March 5, 1929 during the great depression on a fourth generation Iowa farm.
She is predeceased by her parents Walter Hoskins and Mattie Yearlington Hoskins. And her siblings Ralph Hoskins, Elsie Crosswhite and Wilbur Hoskins. Along with Darell VanFosson and current husband Ervin Holmes.
Alice is survived by her daughter Darla VanFosson, step daughter LeAnn Chrestensen and granddaughter Amanda Lee Chrestensen.
Alice learned to be thrifty, she worked hard and had a great upbringing by her parents. They were a self-sufficient family in the Iowa area.
She graduated from Richland Consolidated School in 1947 and rode in a horse drawn schoolbus for eight of her school years. After graduation she began attending Missouri College in the fall of the same year.
She married Darell VanFosson on June 18, 1950. And taught school for 13 years and during that time her daughter was born in 1959. The family moved to California where she worked for TWA airlines.
She took her first plane ride which was a one-day trip from LA to NYC and back, with a close friend. It was an amazing trip up among the clouds that she would never forget. She also worked for Continental airlines for 20 years before retiring.
She was married to Ervin Holmes for 46 years. The two of them enjoyed many adventures together including traveling. And taking care of family in Iowa, while enjoying the quiet Iowa countryside. Their favorite vacation spot was Hawaii.
Alice also belong to a quilting group of seven ladies that met once a month. They enjoyed working on quilts and visiting with each other. The host for the day served a great lunch for all.
She is leaving behind many family and friends, including two students from her teaching days that remain in touch with her still today.
