Alvin L. Walters

August 16, 1928 — August 9, 2020

Alvin L. "Al" Walters was born in Fort Lupton, Colorado on August 16, 1928. He died on August 9, 2020, just one week shy of his 92nd birthday. His family moved to Denver during the depression. In his youth, he helped his father load and unload coal. He was paid $1.00 per ton. Dad once moved 14 tons in one day. Al became acquainted with many contractors as his father hauled water, and during the summer, leased his truck to paving companies.

Al graduated from Denver North High School and after school joined the Navy. He became a Chief Petty Officer and saw the testing of the atomic bomb detonation on Bikini Island.

Following the service, Dad went to Barnes Business School, then worked days at the Elaterite Roofing Company and attended night school. In 1950, he was offered a time keeper position at Western Paving. He stayed 39 years there and became President of the company and oversaw many improvements and acquisitions. He was the President of the Colorado Contractors Association in 1978. Some of his favorite projects included the construction of the runways at the former Stapleton Airport and DIA, being a partner of the Eisenhower Tunnel project and the race track at Lakeside Speedway. The owners gave him lifetime tickets to Lakeside Amusement Park.

Dad enjoyed his home and small acreage. Mom often teased him that he named every blade of grass in the yard. He was an avid Broncos fan and was a season ticket holder since the 1960's.

Dad is survived by his sister, three sons, four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marcy, in 2008.
