Balvino S. Martinez Chaves was born June 17, 1942 and passed March 8, 2010. He was preceded in death by his parents Balvino S. Martinez, George M. Chavez and Henrietta Chavez, and also by his sister Lenore A. Eldenburg. He is survived by his wife Mary, three daughters, Carmella Martinez Baldridge (Tim), Sarah Martinez Chaves, Anastasia Martinez, and two sons, Juan Martinez and Canova Bowens (Bobbi Cinco).
Bal served in many capacities – Executive Director, Legal Counsel, Political Activist, Band Member, Community Leader and most important, Father and Grandfather. Bal held many public and private positions such as Director of Excise & License, Director of Community Relations for Public Service, Director of Community Affairs for ARCO, Executive Director of Legal Aide Denver, and Project Director & Legislative Assistant for U.S. Senator Floyd Haskell. He was on numerous committees such as SCFD, SIAC and Auraria Higher Education Center and served in many capacities with the Democratic committee. The one thing all these jobs had in common was his commitment to helping others.
Bal was a loyal friend and was willing to help out and guide others. He always had advice, be it for an up-and-coming politician, a band member writing a song, or one of the many young people who looked to him for fatherly wisdom.
As a father Bal was kind and caring. He had high expectations of his children and he had a way of knowing and fostering their capabilities. As a husband he was committed and protective and helped his wife be strong when she needed, allowed her a shoulder to cry on and just the right words to make her feel better. He joined forces when needed to raise their kids in a strong united front. They were just 3 months shy of their 40th anniversary.
Bal had a quick wit and great sense of humor that he shared with everyone. His pranks and stories of Michelob on the ledge, cow tipping and hearing cannons will be with us for many generations to come.
Bal's service to his community and love for his family and friends will be missed greatly.
