Betty Jean Harrison Holmes
Betty Jean was the second child born to the late Laura Bates Harrison and Theodore Roosevelt Harrison. She was born February 22, 1945 in the old Gallenger Hospital in Washington, DC. Betty was hospitalized recently for a short period of time and succumbed to respiratory failure on June 24, 2019, surrounded by Sean (her son), Isha (daughter-in-law), and Quentin (her grandson.)
Betty Jean grew up in Washington, DC with three sisters and one brother. She attended Walker Jones Elementary School; Terrell Junior High and Margaret Murray Washington Vocational High School earning credentials to become a Practical Nurse (LPN).
Betty Jean's first jobs in nursing were at the Old Freedman's Hospital and the Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC. She was employed as a practical nurse at hospitals in several states during her career. Betty became the mother to her only child; Sean Hankins. Betty loved the Lord; was a devout Christian who was well versed in the Bible. She was a reflective writer and enjoyed creative writing and left several unpublished projects.
Betty Jean moved to Denver, CO twenty years ago to get away from the hustle and bustle. Her life in Denver proved to be very fruitful as she became an expert/historian in genealogy which bought her an immeasurable amount of joy and pleasure; a membership of Ancestry in which she was all in and acquired an innumerous amount of family history, stories and pictures.
Betty Jean was instrumental in acquiring our father's medical history of over forty years which has provided valuable information for his children. Her own health began to deteriorate over the past year and she succumbed to respiratory failure.
Her hobbies were collecting dolls and taking pictures. Many of her dolls and self-portraits were beautifully displayed throughout her home.
Betty Jean Holmes is survived by her only child Sean Hankins (Isha), five grandsons, Savon, D'juan, Trejour, Tyreish Hankins, Atlanta, GA and Quentin Hankins, Aurora, CO; three sisters; Rev. Maude Harrison-Hudson, Chevy Chase, MD; Katherine Harrison Weaver (Walter), Washington DC; G. Nicole Harrison, Rockville, MD; Robert Harrison only brother preceded her in death; host of nieces, nephews other relatives, friends, Kunta (her beloved dog) and devoted childhood friend Delores L. (Tony) Bevard
