Buela Catherine McCormick, 73, Denver, CO, departed on Friday, July 12, 2002 at St. Anthony's Central Hospital. Services were held at 5PM Sunday, July 14, 2002 at Newcomer Family Chapel in Lakewood, CO.
Catherine was born on March 15, 1929, to Hal and Beula Glessner of Okobojo (Sully County). She was the youngest member of her family, which included her brothers Hal, Robert, John, William and her sister Doris.
Catherine loved people, planes and poetry.....
As an award winning, top sales woman for JC Penney and Golden Cream in Denver, she took pride and pleasure in over 40 years of customer service.
At 19, she accepted the challenge and winnings of a bet (free flight lessons) between her brother John and Cecil Ice, that she could learn to fly. Prior to having a pilot's license, she was the first woman to solo an airplane in South Dakota.
As early as 4th grade, she was awarded for her poetry recitals. She had a reverence for, and command of the English language, inspired by her father, Hal.
She loved the outdoors and was an avid fisherwoman who arranged family fishing trips. She taught her brother Bill how to fish and he taught her how to hunt wild geese and duck. She especially treasured a gift from her son; a trip to Palmer, Alaska to visit him and his family for salmon fishing.
Her artistic interests included sewing, gardening and fashion. Her analytical interests included a passion for politics, journalism and solving puzzles. She loved her children and grandchildren and was an excellent cook. She loved Denver and the nightlife. Catherine lived life to its fullest and knew how to enjoy it.
She brought us love, compassion, tolerance, strength and beauty. She is survived by her 6 children; Linda McQuade (Denver, CO), Ken Huckfeldt (Rock Springs, WY), Carla Creamer (Leesburg, VA), Marilyn Roth (Pierre, SD), Cherie Huckfeldt (Denver, CO) and Claire Huckfeldt (Denver, CO). She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings.
