Byong Hi Chung, beloved grandmother, mother and wife, spent 88 incredible years spreading joy and laughter to any and all around her. A comfort to many and the strength of her family, her time was spent taking care of her family, her friends, and her community. She passed away peacefully in the early hours of Monday, October 16, 2023.
Byong Hi So, the youngest of four children, was born on August 1, 1935 in Woonpyung-gi, Woojung-muyon, Hwasung-gun, Gyeonggi-do, Korea. She learned English while living with Catholic nuns when she lost her parents at an early age. She met her husband, Jae Hon Chung, in Seoul and they married sixty years ago. Byong Hi and Jae Hon had two children, Julie and Woo.
Byong Hi forged the way for her family by bravely immigrating to the United States alone. She arrived in Denver, Colorado in May 1973. Jae Hon and her children would join her in February 1974. For the next fifty years of her life in the United States, she worked tirelessly to support her family and her community.
Byong Hi worked for Western Electric/Lucent Technologies/Nokia for 20 years, retiring in 1996. Since 1973, she was an active member of Korean Christian Church in Denver. She and Jae have devoted themselves to serving their church and community for the past 50 years.
Byong Hi was smart, kind and strong willed with an enormous heart and a wicked sense of humor. An amazing and generous cook, she would feed anyone who would enter her home hungry. She was generous with her time, effort, smiles and hugs. She was loyal and brave, and the foundation of her family.
Byong Hi is survived by her husband Jae Hon, her daughter Julie (husband Anthony Faust), her son Woo (wife YoungHee), and four grandsons: Theodore Faust, Nathan Faust, Jonathan Chung and Caleb Chung. She will be forever missed.
The funeral service will be held on October 26 2023 at 11:00 a.m. at the Metro East Chapel, Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions (190 Potomac Street, Aurora, CO 80011). Following the funeral service, the grave side service will be held at 1:00 p.m. at Fairmount Cemetery (430 S. Quebec St., Denver, CO 80247).
