Carl Richard Stevens

March 23, 1922 — June 17, 2021

Carl Richard Stevens, age 99, was born March 23, 1922 in Rosetown, Saskatchewan, Canada. He is survived by his son, James R. Stevens, his daughter-in-law, Lana; his daughter, Marlys K. Brewer, his son-in-law, Bradford T. Brewer; and his granddaughter, Amanda K. Brewer.

Carl, also known as Richard, was born to Carl Stevens (1879-1973) and Astrid Kihl Stevens (1898-1940) and was the only child. Shortly after Carl was born in Canada, he and his parents moved to the United States, settling in Denver, Colorado and receiving their US Citizenship.

Carl attended school at Perry and Barnum Elementary Schools and then attended and graduated from Denver's West High School at 9th and Elati Streets in 1940 at the age of 18. (Five months before Carl graduated from high school, his mother, Astrid, passed away without the help of antibiotics as they had not been developed at that time.) After graduation from high school, Carl enlisted in the United States Navy and in the next four years, he spent most of his time on the USS Pinnacle, a mine sweeper ship, in the South Pacific. Carl was stationed in several different places such as Hawaii, China, and Japan (not necessarily in that order) during his naval career and was eventually promoted to Chief Petty Officer in charge of approximately 20 personnel.

When Carl was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1946, he returned to Denver where he started working as an Apprentice at a machine shop. Carl worked in various machine shops at the start of his career while in the meantime, he met his beloved and to-be wife, Martha Peterson at a Dance Hall that also catered to service personnel and veterans. They eventually became engaged and had a beautiful double wedding with Martha's sister, Helen and her fiancé, Bob Fischer on May 15, 1948.

Carl and Martha raised their two children, Jim and Marlys at 336 Osceola St. in Barnum until they both left for college, attending CSU. During that time, Carl started working for Martin Marietta (Lockheed-martin) in 1957 until his retirement in 1987 - 30 years later. During this time, Carl received several awards for his workmanship as a Jig Bore Operator on machined parts for all of the division's major and minor space craft programs (i. e. Space Shuttle, Viking Landing on planet Mars, all three models of the Titan, and on the Skylab).

After retiring from Martin Marietta, Carl and Martha had the opportunity to travel to several different places such as Europe, Hawaii, Canada, New York City, Washington D.C. and various other states within the U.S., and they took a cruise ship to the Panama Canal, Alaska, Mexico, and other memorable places.

Carl enjoyed fishing and playing golf with all different people: family, relative, neighborhood friends, and friends from work. He had days where he had a grat game of golf (a hold in one at Foothills Golf Course a 73 years of age) and days where he had sworn he would never pick up a club again. Funny how when a call would come, Carl always made his way back to the golf course, well into his 90's. Carl also enjoyed family time... building chugs, working on cars and hanging out with Jim. He helped Marlys with assembling and repairing her doll houses, driving Marlys to and from Roller City and being supportive with education as he was for Jim. We really had a nice growing up. Every summer we would drive to Bertrand, Nebraska to visit our maternal grandparents, but we did have a few other vacations and family outings.

Carl was a good man... special, caring honest and sincere man. A husband, father and grandfather. He will be missed by Jim and Marlys, Lana, Brad and Amanda, and his friends - several of them from Lakewood Estates where he lived the last year and a half. We love you Dad. Rest in Peace and walk in Heaven with Mom. Amen.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.

As friends and family heard of our Dad's passing, comments were made that were worth mentioning and sharing to all:

..."he was such a good man..."

..."he was a special man and I will miss him. My love to all of you."

......"your Dad had a wonderful life but it is still so, so hard to lose a parent. Our hearts go out to you, Brad and Amanda. Love you."

..."he was a sweet man. He is better off than we are. Thank you, Jesus. Love you and in our prayers."

..."what an incredible long life.. I am always amazed at how long some people can be here on earth. I'm sure he's in a warm and cozy place with God."

..."hope you find peace knowing he is with your Mom."

..."he was such a nice man, I always enjoyed being around him and having conversations with him. He was a good man."

..."we all miss Carl. He was a good, honest man and always wanted to better himself with exercise and a healthy diet. At Lakewood Estates, he had several friends, who will miss him very much."

..."he had a great run on life. I have so many fond memories of him from the old days and later, the time we spent on the golf course. As I think back, one of the first memories was that of him and my dad burning hamburgers on the grill on Sunday afternoon. They would bring in a stack of small hockey pucks they swore were hamburgers. I was in my teens before I realized that hamburgers were delicious. My love and sympathy to you and Jim, say hey to Brad and Amanda, take care."

..."I have a lot of memories of going out to dinner, etc. with your dad. He was always friendly and nice to be around. I hope you guys are doing well."
