Carol Ann Corby

July 4, 1937 — March 4, 2024

Born: July 4, 1937, in Evanston, Illinois.

Born to Eternal Life: March 4, 2024, in Aurora, Colorado.

Beloved daughter of Alexander Schiller and Marie L. Schiller. Baptized according to the Rite of the Roman Catholic Church at Queen of All Saints in Chicago. She was educated in parochial schools and studied at the St. Francis School of Nursing in Evanston. Carol married Donald G. Corby of Jamestown, North Dakota, on June 20, 1959 in Chicago, Illinois. On their honeymoon in Estes Park, in the magnificent Rocky Mountains, Carol may have envisioned raising a family in colorful Colorado one day.

Carol was a devoted military wife and mother. Over the next 11 years, the Corbys were stationed in San Antonio and El Paso, Texas, as well as Germany and Illinois, before returning to Colorado at Fitzsimmons Army Medical Center in Aurora. She gave birth to 6 children named Timothy, Thomas, Kathleen, Suzanne, Barbara and Anne Marie. In 1972, mom and dad purchased a home on Dearborn Street in Chambers Heights. Life was good, we had fun and mom handled ALL the details. As time passed, Carol's many grandchildren would also run in the backyard, raid the refrigerator and celebrate at holiday feasts. Her house, filled with the sound of children for over 40 years, was a joyful and noisy place.

Carol lived a life of service. She was active in many organizations including the Officer's Wives Club, several Parent Teacher Associations, and St. Pius X Catholic Church. Mom supported her children in sports, the arts, education and the church. She helped guide us to life beyond high school, and to appreciate the value of independence and self-reliance.

Carol loved the outdoors! She loved state and national parks, forests and monuments all over the United States. We travelled by truck, camper and trailer from Florida to California, and from Canada down into Mexico. We didn't just drive through, we got out of the truck and walked the trails, explored the visitor centers and camped under the stars. Mom enjoyed ranger presentations around the campfire and scenic views along the way.

Carol was an avid sports fan and loved the arts. A true Chicago girl, her heart belonged to the Bears and Cubs. She also cheered on many Colorado college and professional teams. The Broncos earned her support during the Dan Reeves era. She held season tickets for the Denver Nuggets for several years. Mom loved the theater, music concerts and performances at the Center for Performing Arts, as well as the zoo and numerous museums in the city. She listened to music often and sang along on occasion.

Carol was active. A huge fan of Aquacise, she exercised several times a week. She and her friends enjoyed playing dice, card, and domino games together. Mom enjoyed travel and visited the islands of the Caribbean, Mexico and Hawaii annually for some well-deserved beach time when her children had all grown up. It was during this time that she would also visit and support her parents frequently, despite their living over 1,000 miles away in Chicago. Her devotion to our grandparents was inspiring.

Carol was loved! Whether it was at a 1st birthday party for a grandchild, or on the sidelines of her own daughter's soccer match, or on a camping trip, with all 3 generations together in the mountains, she connected with people and made them smile. Mom continued to make friends even when her voice could not be heard. At Juniper Village, mom was loved by all of the staff and administration. Everyone would remark how friendly, and funny, she was. They said she spoke with her eyes and facial expressions and they knew she was listening.
