On Sunday evening, February 11th 2018, Carol Louise Lewis passed away peacefully after complications from a stroke.
She is survived by her sister, Virginia Van Doren, her husband of 64 years, Robert Eugene Lewis, her 4 children, Craig Lewis of Honolulu, Teresa Lewis and Mark Lewis of Denver and Kent Lewis of San Jose, CA. Plus 3 grandchildren, Dane, Tiphanie and Jack and 2 great grandchildren, Carter and Everly.
Carol was born on November 5th 1932 to John Wilson and Lael Louise Van Doren in San Francisco, CA where she spent the first 12 years of her life before moving north to Klamath Falls, Oregon with her family in 1944.
Carol graduated from Klamath Union High School in 1950 and went on to Oregon State where she majored in physical education with a primary focus on modern dance inspired by the choreography of Martha Graham, graduating in 1954.
After graduation, Carol accepted a teaching position at Gervis High School in Gervis, Oregon. It was there that she met her future husband and fellow teacher, Robert. They were married August 14th 1955.
Shortly after their wedding Carol and Robert moved to Portland where Robert had taken a position at Roosevelt High School. Over the next 4 years Carol and Robert had 4 children, Craig, Teresa, Mark and Kent. Needless to say, 4 young kids kept Carol quite busy.
If raising 4 children wasn't enough of an adventure, Robert accepted a position at Kamehameha Schools in Hawaii for what was supposed to be one year. In August of 1964, the family moved to Hawaii. Life goes on and one year turned into 34. During that time Carol took a position at Kamehameha Schools as a Paraprofessional Aid in the Elementary Division, retiring in 1994.
It was also in Hawaii that Carol developed a love of craft and creating things. Quilting was a huge interest and one where she developed many lasting friendships. She created many traditional quilts but fell in love with the Hawaiian Quilt which was very unique to the islands. Carol's hands were seldom idle as she was also knitting sweaters as gifts when she wasn't immersed in quilt creations.
In 1998 Carol and Robert left Hawaii for Palm Desert, CA where they were now in driving distance to family.
In 2003, at the urging of her children Teresa and Mark another move took place. This time to Denver, CO. Living in close proximity to 2 of their children meant frequent get togethers for dinners, brunches and all the Holidays.
Carol's last 3 years were spent in the loving care of Chelsea Place, surrounded by caregivers who genuinely cared about the people they helped - day in and day out.
In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested in Carol's Memory to Alzheimer's Association: Colorado Chapter, 455 Sherman St. #500, Denver, CO 80203.
