Chloe Grace Stevenson was gracefully taken to her eternal home at the age of 15 1/2 months after an almost 10 month battle of childhood cancer. Chloe was born at Campbell County Hospital in Gillette, Wyoming on June 25, 2021 to David & Katey Stevenson and passed away on October 13, 2022 at the Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children (RMHC) in Denver, Colorado. She is survived by her parents, her big sister - Elizabeth and her growing baby brother in her mother's womb.
On December 28, 2021, a 10cm mass was found within Chloe's abdomen during her 6-month well child exam. She and her immediate family were airlifted to RMHC for further testing where multiple tumors were found within Chloe's infant body. On January 5, 2022, test results indicted that young Chloe had Stage 4 Neuroblastoma in the high risk category. She underwent five rounds of chemotherapy before surgery removed 99% of the largest remaining tumor. Pure excitement followed the surgery as post-surgery scans gave no indication that cancer remained in Chloe's body. Per treatment plans, Chloe was then transferred to Children's Hospital in Aurora, CO for June 1st to begin her first of two Bone Marrow Transplants (BMT). Following 23 days of inpatient care, Chloe was discharged from BMT only 2 days prior to her first birthday. Shortly after celebrating her 1st birthday, Chloe found herself back in the hospital with a blood infection. During the admission, scans were taken and gave the devastating results that new active tumors had grown - a rare and detrimental finding for Chloe and her family. Chloe was immediately transferred back to her primary oncology team at RMHC in attempt to begin new experimental treatment options that were giving promising results to children with Neuroblastoma. On July 30th, in the midst of waiting and preparing Chloe's body for new treatments, Chloe was admitted to the PICU at RMHC for a fever and yet another blood infection. Once Chloe's body was healed from the infection, she underwent new chemotherapy treatments in addition to chest and abdomen radiation, and one round of antibody infusions. Even with such new aggressive and pain-ridden treatment options, the active tumor only slowed its growth before additional tumors were found growing. It was at that point that Chloe's parents were forced to make the heart wrenching decision to stop treatments entirely. It became increasingly known that treatments were only doing more to Chloe than for Chloe. After a long 75 day PICU admission, Chloe shared her final breaths in room 3009 with her loving parents at her side. As peacefully and beautiful as ever hoped for, Chloe was welcomed to the arms of our Savior at 10:50pm on the evening of October 13th.
Through each uphill battle in the course of nearly 10 months of treatment, Chloe's unwavering drive to win her fight with cancer was just one of her countless strengths. During the roughest of days, Chloe's sweet smile lit up every room she filled. With growing teeth, she always tried her very best to jabber, giggle, and share her many "uh ohs" and "yeas" to her family and friends. Through the pain of her tumors, Chloe learned to crawl and adventure through her home while being on the verge of standing without support. She was so determined to walk before her final admission that she constantly amazed her family and friends. Chloe's fierce determination always left her doctors and nurses in awe as her fight to overcome her cancer never shed a glimpse of doubt with her body continually going against her. Chloe was a true, genuine warrior. She will endlessly be remembered for her beautiful grace in the face of pain, her love for fuzzy blankets and pacifier, her favorite red ball, toy truck, and chapstick, her funny yet displeased moments of being gently told "no", her backwards waves, her requirement for foot massages from doctors and nurses, and finally, her sincere love and joy that only came from her big sister, Lizzie - a special bond that will be hard to replace.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at Christ Our Redeemer Lutheran Church on Saturday, October 22, 2022 beginning at 12:30 pm with a public viewing. A service will follow starting at 2pm.
