Darlene JoAnn Abernathy, 82, of Thornton, CO, passed away April 14, 2022, after a long battle with Alzheimers Dementia. She was born January 4, 1940, in Auburn, Nebraska, the daughter of Edwin and Alice Stanton.
Darlene married Gilbert D. Abernathy on May 12, 1956. They had three children. They were married 65 years.
Darlene and Gilbert enjoyed dancing at the Eagles Club in Nebraska City, NE during the 1960s. They developed a love for Nebraska football and after moving to Colorado also supported the Denver Broncos, CU, and CSU football teams. Darlene learned to bake birthday cakes and decorate them. She enjoyed baking cakes for all of her grandchildren's birthdays. She also crocheted blankets for her grandchildren.
Darlene was a person of faith and attended Intercession Episcopal Church in Thornton, CO. She lived her faith by helping with the hospitality ministry and learning as much as she could in Bible study groups, also frequently blessing others.
Darlene worked in the electronics industry beginning with Western Electric in Omaha, NE. After moving to Denver, Colorado in 1972, she worked for electronics companies Storage Technology Corporation and McDATA Corporation.
She is survived by her husband, Gilbert D. Abernathy (Arvada, CO); one son; Daniel G. Abernathy and wife Elaine (Denver, CO); two daughters; Deanna Abernathy (Thornton, CO); Sandra Abernathy Marusin and husband John (Sterling, CO); six grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandson.
Darlene is preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.
Darlene's Celebration of Life and reception will be held at Intercession Episcopal Church, 3101 E 100th Ave, Thornton, CO 80229 on Saturday, May 7th at 1pm in the afternoon. Please join us if you are able.
