Daryl Emery Nelson was born in Stanton, Iowa on March 17, 1928, the oldest of four children born to Emery and Mabel (nee Hoaglund) Nelson. He passed from this life into eternal life on Tuesday, February 26, 2008 at the Cherrelyn Health Care Center in Littleton, Colorado. Daryl was 79 years old at the time of his death.
The family worked on a number of farms in Iowa during Daryl's childhood. In 1946 he graduated from high school in Red Oak, Iowa and continued to work in a variety of jobs those years shortly after the end of World War II. In 1950 Daryl was drafted to serve our country in the Korean Conflict, serving in the United States Navy from 1950 through 1954.
Following his discharge he attended the University of Omaha, completing his four-year degree in three years. Following graduation he began a new life, working for Western Electric in Omaha and finding his sweetheart, Dorothy Bangert. Dorothy and Daryl married in Rosemont, Nebraska on January 10, 1960. To this union of 48 years they were blessed with seven children: Melanie, Julie, Brian, Barry, Larry, Angela and Kathryn.
In the early 1960's Dorothy and Daryl moved to the Denver area where Daryl would begin his work with an accounting firm in downtown Denver. Then in 1965 Daryl began his own accounting firm and continued his love of his work until shortly before his death. He also owned and maintained a Laundromat for many years.
Daryl was brought into the Kingdom of God through Holy Baptism and later confirmed that faith. For many years he attended worship at St. John's Lutheran Church in Denver and has been a member here at Ascension since 1995.
He is preceded in death by his sister, Phyllis who died in infancy. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; their children Melanie Warren, Julie Walz, Brian Nelson, Barry Nelson, Larry Nelson, Angela Nelson and Kathryn Nelson; his sisters Colleen and Carolyn; 8 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren, a host of other friends and relatives.
Visitation, Sunday from 2:00PM until 6:00PM and Funeral Service, Monday, 12:30PM both at the Newcomer Family Funeral Home - West Metro Chapel, with Pastor John Larson, officiating. Following our service we will go to Fort Logan National Cemetery for interment and Military Honors by the U. S. Navy and the All Veterans Honor Guard. Following the interment you are invited to Ascension Lutheran Church, 1701 W. Caley Avenue in Littleton for a light luncheon.
