David William Dooley was born February 26, 1954 in San Rafael, CA to William and Edith Dooley. He grew up in Sonoma County with his brother, Bill, and his sister, Denise. David attended Sonoma State University, where he participated in track and field, and studied Communications.
In his early twenties, David established a career as a 9-1-1 dispatcher. David started his career with Sonoma Police Department (1972-1977), later moving to Fremont Police Department as Communications Supervisor (1977-1984), and Deschutes County Communications Agency as Director (1984-1987). David worked for Mountain View Police Department as a Dispatcher and founding member of the SWAT Tactical Dispatch Team (1987-2001). It was at Mountain View that he became known as Radio Dave. He referred to his years with Mountain View as the finest of his extensive career. David was also a proud Instructor for First Contact 9-1-1 (2007-2015). David retired from the City of Aurora as a Dispatch Supervisor in 2015.
David had many interests outside of Dispatching, including crosswords, great beer, bowling, and literature. He was sarcastic, witty, analytical and never failed to check the weather. After retirement, he could be found playing poker, watching westerns, and traveling with his family. In 2018, David completed his degree in Public Administration & Management at Colorado State University, "just because he could."
David is survived by his wife, Rebecca Dooley, his children Shannon, Samantha, Erin, Elise, Jacob, Caleb and Logan, grandchildren Zoe, Sloane, Kyreena, Saveena, and Silas, and great granddaughter Vivily. David is also survived by his father, William, brothers Tom and Bill, and sister, Denise. David is preceded in death by his mother, Edith, and many of his "best good" dogs.
David departed this life on September 5, 2023, after valiantly contending with cancer. Prior to his departure, he said, "Tell everyone how much I love them." Services will be held at St. Martin in the Fields in Aurora, Colorado on September 30, 2023 at 11 a.m.
