David Lee Miles, well known for his humor and good natured personality, passed away on October 24, 2024, at the venerable age of 75. After battling with dementia for nearly six years, David left this world peacefully in his Aurora home surrounded by his family and those who loved him most.
David was born on April 8, 1949, in Harrisburg, Illinois, to Dwight and Thelma Miles. After graduating from Heath High School in Paducah in 1967 David joined the United States Air Force as an enlisted airman.
David married the love of his life, Diane Miles, on November 9, 1968, and during their nearly 56 years of marriage had four children: Danette, David, Dawn, and Dusty.
During his 22 years of dedicated service David achieved the rank of Master Sergeant, comporting himself with both honor and distinction. His service career saw him stationed in New York, Ohio, the Philippines, Indiana, Colorado, and Germany. David was assigned to a variety of fields during his tenure though he particularly excelled as an instructor for the Color Guard/ Military Funeral Services Unit and as a Career Field Instructor. David retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1990 and went on to work as a civilian instructor of Food Services and then put in many years as an associate at AutoZone.
David had a deep passion for motorcycles and riding, enjoying the thrill of the open road at any and every opportunity. From 1988 to 1998 he channeled that passion as a motorcycle safety instructor, coaching hundreds of other riders in the safe and effective operation of motorcycles. His love of motorcycles was only rivaled by his interest in the whimsical science fiction world of Gene Roddenberry’s Star Trek series.
David’s life over these last ten (10) years was filled with love and laughter, as all four of his children and their families were close by. He filled his days lounging beside his beautiful wife, getting to know his grandchildren, and generally enjoying his hard-earned retirement.
David is preceded in death by his sister Dona. He will always be remembered with much love by his brother Phill, his sisters Cindy, Pam, and Sharon, Diane, his cherished wife, his four children Danette, David, Dawn, and Dusty, his 14 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.

Spock’s Eulogy spoken by Captain Kirk in “The Wrath of Khan”.
We are assembled here today to pay final respects to our honoured dead.
And yet it should be noted that in the midst of our sorrow, this death takes place in the shadow of new life, the sunrise of a new world; a world that our beloved comrade gave his life to protect and nourish.
He did not feel this sacrifice a vain or empty one, and we will not debate his profound wisdom at these proceedings.
Of my friend, I can only say this: of all the souls I have encountered in my travels, his was the most… human.
