Denzel (Denny) Ernest Cowan was born on July 28, 1915, the third son on Mahlon and Nettie (Hagerman) Cowan. He was reared on the family farm west of Aldrich, MO. He often talked of riding to the country school on horseback, and graduated from Aldrich High School in 1933. Denny earned a bachelor's degree in education from Southwest Missouri State Teachers' College (now Missouri State University) in Springfield, MO and taught high school for several years. When World War II started, he enrolled in Officers' Training School at Notre Dame University in South Bend, Indiana. He was commissioned an ensign in the U.S. Navy and served on the U.S.S. Dover and the Suamico in the South Pacific. At the time of his discharge, he held the office of lieutenant.
On June 21, 1944, Denny was married to Meryl Alice Beghtel, and after the war they settled in the South Bend area where he taught school for 28 years. In 1954, Denny & Meryl opened a Dog and Suds Drive-Inn which operated until 1969. They then moved to Denver, CO and in 1996, to Loveland, CO. During the time they lived in Denver, they operated several businesses, including a Joyce's Submarine Shop.
Survivors include his wife, Meryl, two sons, Bill (Polly) of Mt. Vernon, MO and Jim (Peggy) of Loveland, six grandchildren, Kristen Cowan, Mt. Vernon, Laura (Colin) Hazelton, Mt. Vernon, Elizabeth Cowan, Springfield, MO, David Cowan, Ft. Collins, CO, Mark Cowan, Ft. Collins, CO, and Angela Cowan, Mt. Vernon, MO, and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Everett Cowan and Clarence Cowan.
Visitation 1 hour prior to the service. Services Wednesday, August 9, 2006, 2pm at Newcomer Family West Metro Chapel, 901 S. Sheridan Blvd., Lakewood, Colorado.
Interment Ft. Logan National Cemetery, Thursday, August 10, 2006 at 9am, staging area "B".
