In Memory of
DERALD D. RHUDY
1929 – 2022
Born October 1, 1929
Passed away June 29, 2022, age 92
Derald was born in the family ranch house in Elbert County to Flora and Earl Rhudy. He grew up living and working on the ranch with stories of nearly getting run over by the disc harrow as a boy and shooting rabbits for dinner while out plowing the fields. He went to school in a one room school house in his early years and graduated from Elbert High.
Derald met his wife Margaret at a dude ranch near Elbert where she was working for the summer break from Colorado Women's College. Margaret's story is that Derald's mouth dropped wide open as she rode by on her horse as a trail guide. Derald then made a point of going to a dance at the dude ranch to meet her. After getting married, he joined the air force working as a technician. He then went on to work at AT&T as a trouble shooter.
Due to Derald and Margaret's work schedules, it was Derald who carted his four daughters to their various ballet, music, and scouting activities. This, at a time when fathers didn't do such things. He waited with the other moms quietly reading, always reading. He was also the main cook, and a great handyman. It seemed he could do anything and do it with quality craftmanship. He enjoyed camping with his family on their property, "Rhudy Acres", near Westcliffe.
Derald was a devoted husband to Margaret. She was the center of his life.
He is survived by his daughters; Wanda, Kathleen, Patricia and Rebecca, 6 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
