Diana Charlton Lyford

Diana Charlton Lyford - April 10, 1933 to February 6, 2021 - Denver, CO

Diana passed away on Saturday, February 6, 2021 surrounded by her four loving children. One of four children of Maj. General Robert D. Charlton and Carolyn P. Charlton, she was born in Denver and grew up in several places while her father's career progressed in the US Army, ending up in Berkeley, CA where she graduated from the former Anna Head School for Girls. Upon receiving her degree from Wells College in 1954, she lived briefly in New York City before returning home to Denver to be closer to family.

It was there she met her husband to be, Richard T Lyford Jr, they were married in 1958 in a union that lasted 62 years until they both passed within five months of each other. While Diana had many interests, her real joy came from raising four children and subsequently helping with six grandchildren. Known as "Charli" to her grandkids, she delighted in attending any sporting event, graduation, holiday show or other activity involving any of her family. She made holidays, birthday celebrations and family gatherings magical and joyous occasions. Despite this busy schedule, she still found time to teach silk-screening to arthritic patients at the Arthritis Craft Shop, volunteered at the Museum of Nature & Science, and was involved with both the National Society of Colonial Dames - CO chapter and the Junior League of Denver.

After her husband retired, the two of them traveled extensively, visiting every state and over 60 countries, many of them multiple times. She delighted in history and always insisted on detours through museums or stopping to look at "Hysterical" (Historical) Markers along the road. In between travels she stayed busy with tennis, golf, opera, bridge, crossword puzzles, and weekly visits to the library to find more to read.

Diana was predeceased, by her husband and is survived by four children, all of Denver; Ashley L. Schumar (Michael Schumar), Richard T. Lyford, III, Cary Lyford (John Self) and Andy C. Lyford (Beth Lyford), along with six grandchildren; Sara Schumar, Hannah & Connor Lyford, Kellen & Ryan Self and Grace Lyford. Additionally, Diana is survived by her siblings Julia R. Lafean (MN), Kim C. Spears (NC) and Daniel J. Charlton (NH).
