Don was born August 21, 1934 in Hays, Kansas. He is the older of two children born to Eugene and Eleaniore Engel. Don was baptized August 22, 1934 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Hays, Kansas.
He had many happy memories of his childhood days. One of these memories was when he stayed at his grand parent Leiker's home in the summer months. Talk about a confused kid… when he was asked, in the first grade, how many brothers and sisters he had, Don started to name his uncles and aunts from the Leiker family. Many of them were still young enough to be living at home. When Don's folks got wind of this they all had a big laugh and proceeded to set him straight. Don's younger brother Keith, passed away in September 2012.
Another fond memory was when he helped his dad and grandfather Engel on the farm in summer months. Don would drive a tractor pulling the one way, getting the ground ready to seed for winter wheat. For a reward he got to use the truck on Saturdays to pick up trash in the city of Hays for extra money.
Don was brought up a strict Catholic, attending catholic schools all of his childhood days, with the exception of two years. He also attended St. Joe's Military academy in Hays. Don loved all sports and played baseball, football, basketball and track.
Don married Margaret Richmeier in October, 1953 and they had two sons, Don Jr. and Steven.
After he moved to Grand Bend, Kansas, Don went to work for "Scheufler Supply Company", which was an automotive parts place of business. He started from the bottom in the receiving department. He was then promoted to the shipping department and then into the office, in accounting. He decided to try different fields of work, but chose his career in the accounting field. He like this occupation the best.
Don moved to Denver, Colorado in 1963 and went to work for "National Cash Register". Here he met his wife Linda. This was the love of his life! They were married 36 years and 4 months before she passed away August 2008. Together they had many happy memories. They loved to Polka dance and liked country music. There were both avid "Denver Bronco" fans and were season ticket holders for many years.
Their family consists of two sons, (Don, Jr. and Steven) and one daughter (Krystal). They currently have 7 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Don is proceeded in death by: Spouse Linda Engel, Mother Eleaniore Engel, Father Eugene Engel, Brother Keith Engel, Daughter-in-law Judy Engel, Grandson Ben Gaston (Don Jr's stepson), Grandson James Leeper (Steve's stepson).
