Donald Gean Miller was born on March 31, 1935 at the family farm in Filley, Nebraska. He was the first-born twin, with Ronald Dean Miller following, to Julia Marie Andersen and Hago Miller.
When Ronald and Donald were young they would travel around with their parents working the circus. Julia and Hago would work the food car while the boys ran the rides and games. They had twin piglets on the farm as pets. The family also grew cucumbers to make pickles and the twins would sneak out to get the smaller cucumbers for sweet pickles. They would often get scraped up from the stickers and learned they had to wear gloves and boots. In their teenage years, the boys had 1956 Ford Fairlanes for few years. One was pink and white and the other was blue and white. Don attended West High School. For a few years the boys would go on dates together and they had a lot of fun with people thinking they were identical twins.
Don's first career was in the printing business at Rapidac Reproductions as Supervisor of the print department. He trained and mentored many folks and was a very dedicated employee. Donald enlisted in the Army Reserves in early 1960s. He became a civil servant soon after the Vietnam War began and processed paperwork, necessary supplies, and some equipment for the recruits. Don was appointed Reserve Warrant Officer (CW2) July 1979 and was asked to join the active service September 9, 1985. The job required him to travel a lot to help correct the finance issues for some officers in his command. He received several metals including The Legion of Merit for his service from November 23, 1959 to March 5, 1995 while serving as a Military Personnel Technician and Senior School Administrator. Donald retired from the Army Reserves March 31, 1995 as a Chief Warrant Officer (CW4).
DJ and Don married October of 1985 at their home in Denver, Colorado with a reception at his sister's home in Lakewood, Colorado. They loved to go fishing and camping in the camper and travel with their dogs in their free time. They also attended many formal functions with many of the Army officers in his command. When DJ became ill he took care of her at home until her death in hospice in February of 2010. Don enjoyed going to Blackhawk. He would play crossword scratch tickets on his bus ride up the mountain. If you asked him how he did he would give the general response of sometimes I win and sometimes I lose. He spent many Holidays, family functions, and weekly sports games (Rockies and Broncos) with Larry and JoAnn Gallegos, his very close friends and family.
Donald passed away at home of natural causes on Wednesday, November 25, 2020. He had acute COPD and issues with his stomach which attributed to his death. He is survived by sister, Patricia Anderson; son, Timothy Miller and wife Esme'; daughter, Marlo Filkins and husband Thomas; granddaughters, Ashley Lacombe and husband David, Kristen Miller, Taylor Filkins, and Calli Law and husband Jeff; five great-grandchildren; niece, Kathleen Van Horn; nephew, James Anderson; step-children, and friends.
