Donald M. Thompson, age 81, passed away peacefully on November 25, 2024, at his home in Denver, Colorado. He was born in Sault Ste. Marie, in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, and graduated from Pickford High School in 1961. Don attended Michigan Technological University (Sault Ste. Marie campus) for two years, then transferred to Michigan State University, where he earned a BA in Business Administration in 1965.
Don began his career in the oil and gas industry in Alliance, Ohio with Ashland Oil and Refining Company. Subsequent career moves included Michigan, Oklahoma, and Colorado. He was respected in the industry for his work in sales, marketing, and transportation of gas liquids and asphalt.
He had a passion for the outdoors, enjoying fishing, hunting, skiing, and horseback riding. His hobbies included remodeling houses, woodworking, traveling, and gardening. Don cherished spending time with family and friends, always showing kindness, generosity, and a desire to improve the lives of others.
Don was preceded in death by his parents Morrell and Leila, and his sister Barbara. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, a sister, a brother, three children, two grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and many close nieces, nephews, and cousins. A service to Remember and Honor Don and his remarkable life is planned for early 2025.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a tax-deductible donation to the Pickford Area Historical Museum or the UAMS Myeloma Institute for Research and Therapy. While you’re at it, plant a favorite tree anywhere you wish. Don was particularly fond of apples and spruces.
