Dorothy Albertine Jolly Doherty was born July 10, 1933 in Deer Trail, CO with the assistance of Delia Jones. She was welcomed to the world by her mother, Clara Maria Zoellner Jolly and father, David Simpson Jolly, as well as her two elder brothers, John and David Jolly.
She lived with her family on their ranch east of Deer Trail until 1938 when the ranch suffered a fire, which destroyed their home and eventually took the life of her mother. Dorothy then spent five years with her grandmother in Gypsum, CO. Eventually she rejoined her family east of Deer Trail. Later her grandmother moved to a family house in the town of Deer Trail, where Dorothy joined her for a time. Ultimately Dorothy went back to the ranch with her father, stepmother Albertine, and 3 brothers, John, David, and Gene, where she lived until her marriage in 1951.
While attending school in Deer Trail, Dorothy met the love of her life, John Donald Doherty. After their marriage, they lived a story-book life together in Deer Trail for 52 years. Their marriage produced 3 children, Dawn, David, and Dana.
Dorothy will be remembered as a spirited, out-spoken woman with strong convictions, which she passed along to her children and grandchildren. She instilled in family the responsibilities and values we all share, to "do your best", "stand up for what is right", "be helpful to others", and "never give up"! Dorothy's Christian faith was strong; her belief in the healing and comfort of God was inspiring. She actively participated in local churches and their endeavors throughout the years.
Modeling the spirit of "being helpful to others", Dorothy included many elderly locals in holiday meals at her home, making sure they were included in a bit of festivity for the holidays.
Dorothy was artistic with a flair for the dramatic, which manifested in the hundreds of magnificent cakes she decorated, and her love of beauty and music. She was an active member of the Deer Trail Music Club, organized and played in a small local musical group, and sang and played piano at every opportunity. Dorothy always sought the "pretty" in her world, as was evidenced by her choices in home furnishings and the flowers in every corner of her yard.
Dorothy was always active civically and politically. She was involved with the local historical society, studied, admired and collected antiques with a passion. Vintage clothing was a special interest. She accumulated a large collection, which she utilized, with the assistance of several area friends, to produce vintage fashion shows.
To say that Dorothy had political interests is an understatement. She was a member of the Deer Trail Republican Women's Club and was always actively interested and involved in politics, locally as well as on a state and national level. She proudly attended one of the first "tea parties" in Colorado, in the company of her son, and was (from his radio beginnings), a dedicated Rush Limbaugh fan.
When it came to animals, Dorothy took after her father, (and her husband) who both loved animals. She provided a loving home for many dogs, cats, birds, and ducks over the years. Her pets were always a valued part of her family.
Dorothy now rejoins her beloved husband Don, whom she lost in 2003. She is survived by her children, Dawn Nix (Dewayne), David Doherty (Cheryl), and Dana Clay (Blake), grandchildren, Zak Nix (Jessica), Darren Doherty (Sheila), Jay Doherty (Brianna), Devon Nestor (J.D.), Kyner Clay, Adriana Clay, and Michelle Clay, great-grandchildren Archer Nestor, Finn Nestor, Bjorn Nix, Daniel Nix, and Collins Doherty.
Services for Dorothy will be at the First Baptist Church of Deer Trail, CO (594 Third Avenue) on March 24th at 11:00 AM.
