Douglas Alan Campbell (71) of Littleton, Colorado, passed away on May 27th, 2024, surrounded by his three sons Brandon, Joel, and Neal, brother Larry and sister-in-law Nancy, and his loving wife of 52 years, Janice.
Doug was born and raised a true Colorado native; from slaying wild trout of the Rocky Mountains to cheering on John Force’s record-breaking 300 mph quarter-mile run at Bandimere Speedway, Doug was an outdoor enthusiast and loved spending time outside with his family. More than anything, Doug’s greatest love was his wife Jan whom he had met while still in high school.
After impressing her with his loud muscle cars and sharp sense of humor for just two short years, they married in 1972 at the ages of 18 (Jan) and 20 (Doug). Fifty-two years later and they remain inseparable; truly best of friends and a shining example to all those around them of what love can endure.
Growing up in Denver and Fort Collins, Doug graduated from Lincoln High School and enlisted into the United States Air Force in 1972. As an active duty firefighter, Doug was a first responder in charge of protecting others who served and their families until he was honorably discharged in 1976 after achieving the rank of E4 Sargent.
One memorable story he passed on about his time in the military was how he used to gaze above the runways while on base to see pilots even younger than him flying incredibly complex aircraft in stunning formations and how this was the catalyst for him to decide he wanted to do more with his life. That same year, he began studying geological engineering at the Colorado School of Mines.
Following two years at Mines and seeing his potential future working on oil rigs, he decided to pivot his education and enrolled at Regis College where he would graduate in 1982 with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Technical Management. With his degree in-hand, Doug unknowingly kick-started his 37-year career in Capital Management at Lockheed Martin Space Systems, then called Martin Marietta, until his retirement in 2017.
Throughout his life, Doug exemplified rare qualities that inspired so many others to follow in his footsteps. Kindness, compassion, and doing what’s right were central to his larger-than-life persona. He was a natural born leader, often stepping in to help when no one else would simply because “it’s the right thing to do”. Doing what’s right and doing what’s easy was never a choice for our father, husband, brother, cousin, and friend. We will miss him greatly and the impact he’s made in our world.
To honor Doug’s memory, a memorial service will be held at Newcomer in Lakewood, Colorado, on Friday, June 28th, at 10:00 a.m. Reception and interment to Fort Logan to immediately follow the service.
