Eddie Gengo Yamaguchi

December 17, 1935 — January 18, 2024

Eddie Gengo Yamaguchi, lived until the age of 89. He passed away in his sleep at UC Health in the Acute Care Unit for Elderly on January 18, 2024.

Eddie was born in Pleasanton, California on December 17, 1935. He was the youngest of 6 siblings.

His family relocated to Colorado after being interned in Gila, Arizona. He attended Manual H.S. and played baseball as the center fielder for the Mile High Merchants, one of the leagues formed by the Japanese American community post-war. He recalled that "learning something about baseball is to learn something about yourself. It taught me to be a good teammate and work together." He was also a bowler in the Denver Nisei League.

Ed met Florence Fujiwara and in 1960 they were married. They had a daughter Lisa.

Always a thinker and tinkering with projects led him to become a draftsman then he moved on to a career in engineering with Western Electric. Later on he held a management position with US West (Qwest) until he retired. Not one to be idle he stayed busy with landscaping and planting bonsai trees in the yard. He made frequent trips up the hill to Blackhawk and to Las Vegas hoping for a royal flush!

We thought of him as our resident restaurant critic as he tried out new eateries and gave us his '5-star' review of the ones he tried. We had a standing Sunday breakfast at Sam's No. 3 where everybody knew his name. He enjoyed sports both as a spectator and playing golf and following the Broncos. He made golf trips with his friends and family to St. George, Mesquite, North Carolina and Hawaii. He was a longtime member of the Mile HIgh Golf Club.

Eddie was a thoughtful person, quiet in nature and had many interests that reflected his personality. He was fondly known as Uncle Gengo by family and friends.

Ed is survived by his wife of 64 years of marriage, Florence and daughter Lisa (Roger), many nieces and nephews both in Colorado and in California and his brother who lives in Wheat Ridge.
