Edna Jo Gray passed away Thursday, October 29, 2020.
She was born on January 26, 1931 to Jessie Roy & Vada Mae Eskew in Lake Valley, Oklahoma. It was the Great Depression and the family was living with Grandma & Grandpa VanDeventer on the family farm. She had two older sisters, Jessie Mae & Glenna Fae and she was playfully nicknamed "Trottin' Filly", because she was so full of energy!! She had a wonderful childhood and often shared stories with us about the generosity her family showed to others during those years. Her Grandfather would always say, there is always room for one more at the table. When she was in the 8th grade her father Roy passed away from lung complications he had received while in World War I and then she and her Mother moved to Oklahoma City where both her sisters and their husbands were living. Her mother went to work at Tinker Air Force Base and she went to High School at Capitol Hill.
Upon graduation, she went to college at Southwestern in Weatherford Oklahoma where she met the love of her life, Dick Gray. She had many stories about her college days from the dancing in the student union to trying to sneak out of the dorm! Upon her graduation Dick and her married. Both of them were teachers and Dick was a football coach. Consequently, they moved all over Oklahoma and Texas moving to the next best coaching job. It was during this time that their 4 daughters were born. Charlotte was the oldest, then came the twins who passed as infants, and Valerie was the youngest. After 8 years of moving from one small town to another, Dick got his Masters in Business and the family settled in Wichita, Kansas where they raised their family. Edna was an Elementary School teacher and remained in Wichita until she retired.
Upon retirement from teaching, Edna moved back to Oklahoma City where she lived with her sister Glenna. Although retired from teaching, she continued to work at JC Penney's and managed to spoil her five grandchildren, Josiah, Drew, Micaiah, Maleshah & Grant; who were the light of her life. Grandma's house was a blast!!!! Christmas & Summer Vacations were always a treat!
After her retirement from JC Penney's, she became the travelling Grandma. She split her time between Texas & Colorado and literally became everyone's Grandma! She loved her family, she loved her friends and was a woman full of life and love. Her legacy is one of generosity!!! She embodied the truth that "it is more blessed to give than to receive"!
She is survived by her children, Marlin & Charlotte Bender and Greg & Valerie Scoggins, her grandchildren, Josiah & Crystal Bender, Drew and Britta Scoggins, Geno & Micaiah Parreco, Chris & Maleshah Nordloh and Grant Scoggins, her great grandchildren, Judah, Treasigh, & Zara Bender, Emerson & Beckham Parreco, and Leni Jo Nordloh, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
