Elizabeth "Betty" Hunger

May 23, 1942 — April 24, 2022

Elizabeth "Betty" Hunger, age 79, was born in Cincinnati, OH on May 23, 1942. She passed away April 24, 2022 in Colorado Springs, CO.

Betty grew up in Cincinnati where she attended the prestigious Walnut Hills High School before receiving her bachelor's degree in psychology from Ohio Wesleyan University. Upon graduation, she moved to Boston where she pursued further education at Katharine Gibbs College. She subsequently moved back to Cincinnati to work for Proctor and Gamble, becoming their first female marketing brand manager. It was at Proctor and Gamble where she met and fell in love with her husband of nearly 45 years, J. David Hunger.

After marrying in 1969, Betty and David had four daughters and proceeded to move as his career as a tenure track professor and text book author progressed. The family moved from The Ohio State University, to Baldwin Wallace University, to the University of Virginia, Iowa State University, George Mason University, and finally, to St. John's University in St. Joseph, Minnesota. She left the workforce to be a full-time mother, assisting David by typing and editing several editions of his college textbook, Strategic Management and Business Policy. The children were predominantly raised in Ames, Iowa. She was an active home room mom, girl scout leader, carpool driver, sports fan, Collegiate Presbyterian church volunteer, and she celebrated all holidays and family milestones with an above and beyond gusto, overflowing with love and much tradition. When most of the girls were finished with high school, she worked at the Iowa State University Admissions Office. Betty and David retired/moved from Ames, Iowa in 2005 to St. Joseph, MN. Betty loved being on and near the water throughout her life, leading to the selection of their boat and home on Watab Lake. They loved hosting their children and grandchildren along with watching the loons.

She and David were lifelong football and basketball fans, especially rooting for their beloved Ohio State University. She had season tickets to the very first season of the Cincinnati Bengals and enjoyed seeing them make it to the Superbowl in 2022. Betty was always active in the church choir (a passionate alto) and volunteered at many of the churches she attended throughout her life. She loved reading, music, crocheting, quilting, knitting and was a great card player. She also loved picking out presents for her children and grandchildren.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Martha "Judy" and William "Bill" Johnson, and her husband David (2014). She is survived by her brother, Robert "Bob" Johnson, his wife Ann, and their children and grandchildren. She leaves behind her four daughters, Kari (Jeff) McMullen, Suzi (Nick) Schandoney, Lori (Derek) Carmichael, and Merry (Dylan) Kelley, as well as her five granddaughters: Madison McMullen, Megan McMullen, Summer Schandoney, Kacey Schandoney, Mearabelle Kelley, and her two grandsons: Edan Kelley and Greyson Kelley.

The memorial service will be held at Sunrise Church on May 21st, 2022 at 10 A.M. MST in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Betty will be inurned with her husband, David, in the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls, MN.
