Eloy Fernandez, went to be with the Lord Monday, June 17, 2024. He passed away peacefully at his home, surrounded by his loving wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Eloy was born in Brighton, Colorado on September 14, 1934 to Onofre and Julia Fernandez and was the youngest of 16 children. He served in the United States Army and retired from the U.S. Postal Service. After the service, he came home and married his first wife, Shirley Muniz, in a double wedding with Cecilia and Henry Rivera. Together, Eloy and Shirley adopted two children, Sandra and Dean. After 40 years of marriage, his wife Shirley passed away from cancer.
In 2005, Eloy was Blessed again, when he met and married Mary Fernandez. They lived a wonderful life together, having fun, taking trips and making beautiful memories together. Eloy loved camping, playing poker with his nieces and nephews, going “up the hill” to play slots, making hand carved canes from old tree branches as well as other woodworking projects and attending his grandchildren’s games, concerts and competitions.
Eloy always lived life to the fullest and loved every minute he was able to spend time with friends and family. His eyes always lit up every time someone came to visit. Eloy was our strength, our mentor, our hero and a true legend.
He is survived by his wife Mary Fernandez; children, Sandra (Ed) Apodaca and Dean (Regee) Fernandez; grandchildren Mark Fernandez (Jenny Blankenship), Zach Fernandez, Alex Fernandez (Amanda Cintron), Alicia Apodaca (Adam Tafoya), Jared Apodaca (Kelsey Miller); and great grandchildren Jaiden, Riley, Zahriah, Isaiah and Avery. He was predeceased by his parents, 8 sisters, 7 brothers, his first wife Shirley, and his grandson Eddie Apodaca.
