Emma Mae Dickins

July 30, 1946 — August 21, 2022

Emma (Baker) Dickins was born on July 30, 1946, in McComb, Mississippi. Emma was the eldest of 4 children born to the late Arthur Baker and Katherine Green. Emma graduated from Higgins High School in McComb in 1965. Emma was known for her beautiful smooth dark skin and long black hair, which earned her the nickname of Doll because people said she looked just like a baby doll. When she walked into a room, her style and beauty gained the attention of all. As a friend of hers reminisced, "She definitely had the IT factor!" Emma had a passion for cooking but the pleasure she had from seeing the expressions of others as they enjoyed her food far outweighed the enjoyment she had from preparing it. In those times, being raised in the south also meant you were raised in the church and that built the foundation for her love for God and family. But growing up during the civil rights movement in McComb, which was labeled the "Bomb Capital of the World" in 1964, meant her love for and fight for Black people was just as strong. Emma loved to tell stories of the fights our people endured during her era growing up in McComb. Her experiences during these times molded her into a woman who never hesitated to speak her mind.

In 1975, Emma moved to Denver, CO with her two daughters Natasha and Katrina. Emma was a single mother but understood the assignment of going the extra mile. Emma was a jack of all trades; she held various jobs from cosmetologist to working in the hotel industry but ultimately ended her career as a certified nursing assistant. She did everything she knew how to do to ensure she provided for her family. Emma retired in 2017 and moved in with her daughter Katrina and her family.

After retirement, Emma focused her energy on her grandchildren. When she could not be in their presence, you could find her on the phone talking to them at all times of the day. Her other favorite pastime was watching sports. Emma was a sports fanatic. Every morning you could guarantee she would be watching "First Take."

Emma Dickins, 76, of Aurora, passed away on Sunday, August 21, 2022.
Emma is survived by her two children: Natasha Baker and Katrina Baker; brother, Jerry Baker, and sister, Erma (Hubert) Cannon. Also left behind are seven grandchildren and a host of great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
