Eugene Ewing, Sr. affectionately known as “Pap, Gene, or Unk” to his family and friends, was born March 24, 1949, to the late Jessie Sr. and Eatricehas Price Ewing in Prairie, Mississippi. Eugene was the third of eleven children born to this union. In addition, Eugene had two older brothers from his father’s previous marriage.
Eugene confessed hope in Christ at an early age and united with Third Union Missionary Baptist Church in Prairie, MS. Eugene received his formal education in Aberdeen, MS, where he graduated from Shivers Jr. & Sr. High School in 1968. Following the footsteps of his older brother, Eugene moved to Denver, Colorado, in 1969, and eventually made Aurora, Colorado, his home.
While in Denver, Eugene met and married the former Estora Hardmon on April 3, 1971. To this union, two sons were born: Eugene Ewing, Jr. and Evron V. Ewing, Sr. After the dissolution of his first marriage, Eugene married the former Vonda Gay on September 15, 1988. To this union, two daughters were born: Chantal R. Ewing and Cesare M. Ewing.
Those of us who knew Gene knew that Gene was an industrious worker who excelled at caring for his family, friends, and home. Gene loved his family and could count on him from the smallest to the biggest of favors. Gene held down numerous jobs and opportunities here in Colorado. He worked briefly for the Samsonite Company, Cherry Creek Schools, and Budget Rental Car. He owned a janitorial cleaning service where he hired family members looking to make extra money. Gene’s main job was with the City of Aurora Public Works Department where he helped his nephew, Richards Simmons, Jr., and friend, Floyd Alexander, obtain employment. On the job, Gene acquired the name “Peanut” because he always kept a pack of peanuts in his pocket. Gene was employed with the City of Aurora for over 30 years. He retired in 2012 after the death of his wife, Vonda.
Two of Gene’s most prized earthly possessions were his green 1976 Pontiac Grand Prix. In the neighborhood, Gene was recognized for his classic car, which remained untouched in his garage, and his impeccably maintained yard. His pride in these possessions was evident, and everyone admired the effort and attention he devoted to both his vehicle and his property.
Eugene was preceded in death by his parents, Jessie Sr. and Eatricehas Price Ewing, his sister Bonnie Sue Ewing, his brother Jessie Ewing Jr., his wife Vonda Ewing (deceased 2012), and his ex-wife Estora Hardmon Ewing (deceased 2018).
Eugene passed away peacefully at his home in Aurora, Colorado on Tuesday, December 10, 2024. Those left to cherish his memory, are his children: Eugene Jr. (Elizabeth) of Phoenix AZ, Evron (Nycole) of Aurora, CO, Chantal (Scottie) of Harrah, OK and Cesare (Will) of Aurora, CO; five grandchildren: Aubrey R. and Arulan Ewing of Chandler, AZ, Evron Ewing Jr., Cyniah and Ehrius Cashman of Aurora, CO. Gene is also survived by his siblings, Jimmie (Colleen) Ewing, Julia Mason, Willie Parrish, Anita (Nathaniel) Daniels, and Mary (David) Farad of Colorado; John Ewing, George (Nickey) Ewing, Dorothea Crump, and Otis (Jacqueline) Ewing of Mississippi and Johnny B (Betty) Ewing of St Louis, Mo. In addition, he has a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.
One of Gene’s favorite sayings is, “I’m going to rate this conversation an F!” We love you, Eugene Ewing! Take your rest. We all love you, but God loved you best.
Matthew 11: 28-30 New International Version (NIV)
Come to Me, all of you who are weary and carry burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.
