Florence Minnie Johnson of Lakewood, Colorado, died October 30, 2023 at 101 years of age. Florence was born on November 15, 1921 in Glenham, South Dakota, to the late John and Minnie Johnson. Married only once in her life, Florence wed the late Dale Harrison Long in Selby, South Dakota on May 16, 1946. Florence and Dale had 3 children: son Gary and 2 daughters Linda and Vicki.
Dale was an engineer for the Federal Government, so they lived in several places throughout the years based on the requirements of Dale's professional career. Most notably, South Dakota, New Mexico and Wyoming. They settled in a suburb of Denver, circa 1967, where they finished their days working their respective jobs.
Florence was an avid sketch artist and painter for most of her adult life. In her home studio in Lakewood, she drew lifelike portraits and painted beautiful landscapes and animals. She was a licensed cosmetologist and worked for approximately 15-years at Montgomery Wards till her retirement. She had many friends at Wards, who often met once a month for breakfast at a restaurant in Lakewood.
Florence and Dale loved to travel in their 5th wheel trailer across the continental United States and Alaska. They loved to fish for trout in the Rockies of Colorado and Northern Pike on Lake Oahu near Mobridge, South Dakota. They spent summers at the Johnson family farm in Mobridge, South Dakota and winters at Lake Havasu City, Arizona, along with frequent trips to Mexicali on the border with Mexico.
Florence always had a smile for you no matter what life brought to her. Generous, caring and helpful, she had a wry sense of humor and positive outlook. She was beloved by all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by 7 brothers and sisters, Minroy, Martin, George, Frank, Lucille, Grace, and Gladys.
Services will be held graveside at Golden Cemetery
