George Kenneth "Kenny" Hutchinson was born to Bessie and George Hutchinson on July 13, 1922 in a white farmhouse below the water tower in Arvada, CO. He was the youngest of six. His siblings included older sisters Gladys, Olive, Bernice, Thelma and Alene.
He attended Arvada High School where he ran track and met a fellow track runner named Ruthie Monson who would eventually become his wife of 76 years. He liked to joke that he had to run fast enough to catch her! It must have worked because they were married on Christmas Eve, 1942.
He was drafted into the Army Air Corps in November of 1943. He served in the 8th Air Force, 328th Squadron, 93rd Bombardment Group (H). He served as a tail and waist gunner in England-based B-24 Liberator Bombers, flying 35 missions over Germany when life expectancy was 7 missions. His entire crew made it home. He left active service in October of 1945.
He and Ruthie settled north of Arvada off of what is now 90th and Wadsworth. The wooden silo that sits at the NE corner of the intersection is the silo that was on their farm. They welcomed their daughter Arna on a frigid March evening in 1948.
Kenny eventually built them their own home on the family land below the water tower in Arvada in 1954.
He enjoyed many jobs that included working in the family carrot shed, as a truck driver hauling railroad ties from a logging camp in Gould, CO, as the Maintenance Supervisor in the Hungarian Flour Mill, owning a carwash & dry cleaner and selling (and riding!) Arctic Cat snowmobiles. But his true passion was farming. He FINALLY retired in his 70s to the home in Bailey, CO that he had built as a weekend getaway.
He was a family man and a patriot to his core. His infectious grin and mischievous sense of humor will be greatly missed but fondly remembered.
