George (Rog) Newton Rogers Sr, a long-time resident of Littleton, passed away December 15, 2009 at Cherrelyn Healthcare Center in Littleton, CO.
He was born in Haxtun, CO June 12, 1917 to Joseph Elijah Rogers of Indiana and Estelle Maude McKown of Missouri. He was the second youngest of eight children. Joe and Estelle owned a farm named "Wheatlan" outside of Burlington.
He was born in a sod house and lived in it till his father built the first house in the county with running water and electricity. He left home at about 16 to embark on his lifetime adventure, which included rail riding, flying, being a cowboy, working at a circus and following the harvest. And he loved to tell stories about those adventures.
He married Alyce E. Williams in Texas, 65 years ago, and together they raised five children. He was a crane operator by trade but skilled in anything he tried.
Anyone that knew Rog would say he loved life and all the simple things as much as the big things. His children tell stories of the water skiing days and his hard work to support his family. His grandchildren will tell stories of playing pool and "don't walk on the rocks". Everyone would tell stories of his silly glasses and Rocky the sheriff dog.
He will be dearly missed by his wife, Alyce, who was always by his side and shared a love that inspired all who knew them.
He is survived by his beloved sister, Shirley Cornish, as well as his children and their spouses: Mike (Mona) Rogers, Jackie (Ron) De Lage, David (Diane) Rogers, Newton Rogers, Trish (Don) Hartmann, Delton Rogers, Trina (Scott) Rogers; his grandchildren John, Vint, Jed, Aaron, Clarissa, Hans, Brenna, Ryan, Kyla, Scot, Luke, Janae, Miriam, and Amber and his great grandchildren Josephine, Ellyot, Jacob, Wyatt, Lauren and Hunter.
There will be a public viewing at the Newcomer Funeral Home (901 S. Sheridan Blvd. in Denver) on Saturday, December 19th, from 9:30-11:30am, followed by a graveside service at Littleton Cemetery at 1:00pm. Following the service, at the request of George, his family and friends will gather to celebrate his life and share fond memories at the Wolhurst Club House, located at 8201 S. Santa Fe Drive in Littleton.
