Gertrude A. Mills (Maisie) went to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, January 28,2011. Born in Doniphan, NE on April 17, 1927 with her twin brother Glenn. Gertrude was a middle child born to Wayne A. Mays and Katherine J. Peabody. She attended school in Doniphan and graduated from Doniphan High School in 1945. In 1951, Gertrude married Gerald L. Mills (Jerry); the newlyweds lived for a while in Denver before moving to California and Idaho, then back to Denver for the long term.
Gertrude worked in many jobs throughout Denver, for the state and other places. She met many of her long time friends at those jobs. As her children entered grade school, Gertrude started working for Schmitt School and worked there for many years. In 1977 she and her husband were baptized and started attending Westside Christian Church.
Known to her family and friends as Maisie, she was a kind, caring woman who was willing to help where she could. Friends, family members, and those in need (including many charities) were the recipients of her generous nature. Many loved ones cherish the fact that she opened her home and her kitchen to them at any time. Her gift for listening and thoughtful prayer led many to confide in her and they accepted her wisdom and plain-spoken truths. One could always find her either reading, cooking, playing Canasta or listening to her favorite music – gospel or big band.
Gertrude was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald, her sisters Joan Bowlby, Viola Krieger, and Kathryn Mays; her brothers Glenn Mays ,Richard Collinson, and her parents. She is survived by her brothers Wilbur (Virginia D.) and Merle (Carolyn) Mays, Marvin (Ella) Collinson, and sister-in law Helen Mays . She is also survived by her loving children, Harold Mills (Susan) and Barbara Montoya (Ray), and Debbie Monson. Gertrude is also survived by grandsons Jonathan Mills, Dominic and Devin Montoya, granddaughters Stephanie Mills and Geri Montoya, as well as two great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, and in-laws.
A celebration of Maisie's life will be held at Fort Logan National Cemetery, Shelter/Staging Area "B", in Denver, Colorado on Thursday February 3, at 1:30 p.m.
