Gladys M. McArthur, 96 years of age, of Littleton, Colorado (formerly of Holdrege) passed away on Thursday, October 22, 2009 at the Gardens at Columbine in Littleton. Gladys May Lonn was born on May 22, 1913 in Atlanta, Nebraska, the daughter of Frank Albert and Minnie Louise (Leaf) Lonn. She graduated from Oxford High School and attended Nebraska State Teacher's College in Kearney, Nebraska. Gladys taught in rural schools in Garrison and in Harlan County, Nebraska. She married Howard Sylvannus McArthur on June 1, 1941, and they lived and farmed on the McArthur homestead near Atlanta. Gladys later worked in the Phelps County Library in Holdrege. In 1987, she moved from the farm to Holdrege, where she lived until 2007, when she moved to Littleton. Gladys was an accomplished porcelain painter, quilter, and seamstress. She enjoyed decorating cakes and experimenting with new recipes. She also loved gardening, traveling, attending Community Concerts, and playing dominoes and cards with her friends. Gladys was a member of Trinity Evangelical Free Church in Holdrege, where she was active in the White Cross and the Women's Missionary Society. She was devoted to her family and had a strong faith in God. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard, her parents, two brothers: Ralph Lonn and Earl Lonn, and four sisters: Alice Lonn, Bernice Lonn, Leona Jones, and Mirian Lonn. She is survived by four children: Douglas McArthur and his wife, Joan of Austin, Texas, Bonnie Jean Haan of Centennial, Colorado, Lanissa Burns of Centennial, Colorado and Rhoda Preston and her husband, Don of Manly, Iowa; and one sister, Grace Agee of Kingman, Arizona. Also surviving are nine grandchildren: David McArthur and his wife, Bea of College Park, Maryland, Rachel McArthur of Austin, Texas, Greg Haan and his wife, Liz of Commerce City, Colorado, Nick Haan and his wife, Jessie of Mt. Vernon, Washington, Suzanna Kelley and her husband, Jake of Englewood, Colorado, Lisa Kelley and her husband, Terrance of Centennial, Colorado, Kathryn Wahl and her husband, Scott of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota, Timothy Preston and his wife, Amity of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and Ashleigh Burns of Fayetteville, Arkansas; seventeen great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. Visitation Tuesday, October 27, 2009 from 9:00-10:00 A.M. Funeral service 10:00 A.M. both at South Fellowship Church 6560 S. Broadway, Littleton, CO 80121. Reception to follow the funeral service. Graveside Services will be held on Wednesday, October 28, 2009 at 10:00 a.m. at the Prairie Home Cemetery in Holdrege, Nebraska with Pastor Don Preston, officiating.
