"You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and hills will burst into song before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands." Isaiah 55:12
Gregory Steven Stone, 68, slipped away peacefully in his sleep Thursday, February 9, 2023 after experiencing a sudden, fatal heart attack.
Gregg, as he liked to be called, was born August 7, 1954 in Denver, Colorado to J. Robert and Laura R. Olsen Stone, both deceased. He is survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Douglas Brian and Cheryl Stone; by his sister and brother-in-law, Kimberley Kaye and Michael Smith; by his aunt, Marianne Starkey; and five nieces and nephews and their children, all residing in the Denver area, and numerous cousins.
Gregg lived in and around Denver all of his life, was a longtime member of St. Bernadette Catholic Church and Notre Dame Catholic Church, and served as a lay person in several capacities at Notre Dame Church. He graduated from Lakewood High School and Metropolitan State University with a bachelor's degree in Computer Information Systems. He worked at Safeway, Inc. for 34 years, retiring as a Produce Manager and at RTD for 16 years, retiring as a light rail operator.
He loved cars of all kinds, but especially classic cars and owned a classic Thunderbird as well as a modern Ford pickup, both fire-engine red. Gregg enjoyed retirement and looked forward to participating in family dinners, having friends come to his house, joining weekend trips with a classic car club, and meeting weekly for lunch with a like-minded group of friends. He had a new appreciation for art and frequented the Denver Art Museum with his aunt.
He was known for his love of family and his long-term friendships, his friends including Clifford Hawkins; Steve and Jo Lane, their son Ian and daughter Melissa; Bob Halstead, all who he first met in the 1970s; and Mamie Stone (no relation) who he met his first year at RTD more than 18 years ago.
Gregg enjoyed helping family, friends, and neighbors with any project, and he cared for his parents and later his aunt as they aged and needed his assistance. While his cat Tabitha loathed people in general, on Gregg and him alone she bestowed her precious ounce of affection.
"The song has ended but the melody lingers on." Irving Berlin
