Gwendolyn Jean (Golden) Walker was born in Springfield, Colorado, on December 8, 1932, the third of nine children born to Wendell Wentworth and Allie Edna (Kroeker) Golden. She departed this life on April 25, 2024, in Thornton, Colorado, at the age of 91 years.
Gwendolyn was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lorren Curtis Walker; her brothers, Wendell Luther, Harley Eugene, William Alan, Everett Ray, and James Leroy; and her sisters Peggy June (Golden) Davis, and Shriley Ann (Golden) Kramer. She is survived by her two sons – Dennis & Nancy of Thornton, Colorado, and Edgar & Jeannie of Canon City, Colorado. She leaves one grandson, Edgar II, of Canon City, Colorado; and four great-grandchildren – Edgar III, Dylan, Levi, and Briana; one great-great-grandson, Alexander; her sister, Linda May (Golden) Short; and many nieces and nephews.
Gwen and Lorren were married on July 17, 1950, in Springfield, Colorado. Gwen was 17 years old, and Lorren was 19 years old. They had two sons – Dennis and Edgar. She only worked occasionally outside their home. She was happy to keep house and raise her boys. Lorren died in September of 2014, leaving Gwen without her loving husband of 64 years.
Gwen was happiest when she and Lorren were traveling. When Lorren retired from his job in 1997, their retirement years were spent traveling – from Baja California to Prudhoe Bay Alaska - and “snowbirding” in the desert southwest. Gwen and Lorren moved from their home in Aztec, New Mexico, in September of 2013 to be closer to their sons in Colorado.
After a fall in 2021, Gwen could no longer live on her own and moved into Elms Haven Care Center in Thornton, Colorado. She spent many hours in her last years reading. Christian romance novels were her favorite, and it was a full-time job just keeping her e-reader stocked with books. She also loved – and was very good at - crossword puzzles. She was an accomplished seamstress, and loved decorating cakes, cross-stitch, embroidery, and crocheting. Before her health began to fail, she was a faithful church member in all the towns where they lived.
Funeral services will be held at Newcomer Funeral Home, 901 South Sheridan Boulevard, Lakewood, Colorado, on Monday, May 13, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Fort Logan National Cemetery.
