Harry Hand Russell, Jr.

Harry Hand Russell, Jr., 90, of Lakewood, Colorado, passed away on January 19, 2007.

Harry was born on September 25, 1916 in Brooklyn, NY. His family moved to West Virginia a few years later and in 1935, Harry graduated from Cowen High School in Cowen, West Virginia. He then studied a few semesters at Duke University and a full year at Glenville State Teachers College in Glenville, West Virginia.

Due to the shortage of jobs during the Depression, Harry moved to New York City and eventually was employed by Personal Products, a division of Johnson & Johnson. He became a member of East End Baptist Church in Brooklyn where he made lifelong friends. Harry moved to New Jersey when Personal Products relocated to Milltown, NJ. He began attending Tabernacle Baptist Church where he met and eventually married Elisabeth (Betty) Dickerson on December 27, 1941. During their honeymoon, Harry was drafted to serve in the Army in World War II. After tours in the Philippines, Korea and Japan, Harry was discharged in 1946 as a Captain. Harry and Betty settled into their new home in East Brunswick, NJ where they raised four children. Harry worked as Manager of Sales and Distribution for Personal Products and was active at Tabernacle Baptist Church, serving as a Deacon and Superintendent of the Sunday School. He also became very involved with Child Evangelism Fellowship, helping to organize the Middlesex-Union chapter and serving on its Board as well as the State Board.

Betty passed away on February 18, 1970 and Harry retired from Personal Products in 1981. In 1995, Harry moved to Colorado. He joined Beth Eden Baptist Church in Wheat Ridge where he served as a Deacon for a time and participated in their visitation program.

Harry enjoyed spending summers at the Jersey Shore, visiting family members around the country, cheering for the Rockies at games in Denver and at spring training, as well as following various other sports. Harry will be remembered for his disciplined yet generous spirit, his quiet humor and authentic trust in God.

Harry was a devoted son to his parents, Harry Hand Russell and Marian Rasmussen, and devoted father to David Russell, all of whom predeceased him. He is survived by his three sisters, Eleanor Russell, Florence Fisher and Virginia (Dudley) Nelson, along with several nieces and nephews; his children, Harry H. (Marilyn) Russell III, Priscilla Russell, Meta (Mimi) Russell and Sara Russell; his grandchildren, Cristina Russell, Valerie Russell, David Vincent, Heather Vincent, Jaymi (Jon) Ward and Sara (Shawn) Grant, in addition to eight great-grandchildren.
