Hazel Arlena Arney – born October 15, 1938 in Decatur, Alabama to parents Arlin Rowe Mashburn and Effie Knight Mashburn. Hazel passed away Wednesday, October 25, 2022 in Lakewood, Colorado. Hazel is preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Louise Olive and Ruth Mashburn and brother Houston Mashburn, and is survived by her sister Glennis Davis of Oneonta, Alabama. Hazel's family moved to Birmingham, Alabama where she graduated from Woodlawn High School. Hazel worked at a shoe store in downtown Birmingham and it was there that a young man, Dennis Arney, came into the store asking for change for the parking meter. The next day Dennis returned to the shoe store to ask Hazel out on a date, and the rest is history. Dennis and Hazel married and had three children, a daughter Thresa, and two sons, Alan and David. The family moved from Alabama to Lakewood, Colorado in February, 1963.
Dennis and Hazel and the family traveled extensively on family vacations, including car trips covering both coasts and 37 of the continental United States. The family also traveled to the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico, the Canadian Rocky Mountains, and seven countries of western Europe, all before the children graduated from high school. Hazel was proud of her 22 year career at Rocky Flats in Golden during Dennis' 34 year career at the Federal Center and May D&F Department Store in Lakewood. Hazel is preceded in death by Dennis in 2009, and will be buried with him at Ft. Logan National Cemetery. Hazel is survived by her daughter Thresa Arney of Lakewood, CO and her sons Alan (Karen) Arney of Littleton, CO and David Arney of OakRidge, TN. Hazel is also survived by five grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
