Hazel Bell Freeney

June 25, 1921 — April 27, 2020

Hazel Bell Freeney, 98, of Denver, Colorado, formerly of Laneville, Texas, went to be with the Lord to rest with Jesus on April 27, 2020.

She was born June 25, 1921 in Laneville, Texas, the daughter of Charlie and Cleavey (Tatum) Alexander.

When she was in grade school, Hazel enjoyed playing basketball. She received her GED when she was 50 years old.

On January 7, 1937, she married Aaron-Boy Freeney.

Hazel started attending church at an early age and attended Union Grove Baptist Church in Laneville, Texas. She was a Deaconess at the church, organized and fed all of the children that attended the revivals and made sure those children got fed first. She helped anyone and everywhere that she could. Hazel was also an active member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

She loved to sing and hum constantly. She also enjoyed baking and specialized in making tea cakes. She was well-known for her tea cakes. She made sure everyone was fed and taken care of and all the children in the neighborhood who knew her called her "Mama Hazel." Even to the end, she never quit talking and joking. She was a comedian and her favorite saying was, "All around the mulberry bush, 1-2-3, if you want to kiss a pretty girl, come kiss me!" Hazel also specialized in home-brewed beer and sold it for 25-cents per quart. The money was used to purchase school clothing for her eight children.

Later on in life, Hazel became a Seventh-day Adventist and also served as a Deaconess and the Treasurer at the church. She also prepared all of the bread for communion.

Hazel is survived by seven children, Charles Aaron Freeney, Charlene Wesley, Howard Ray Freeney, Lue Ella (Theodore) Beal, Billy G. (Wanda) Freeny, Jimmy Boo Jack City Freeny, Launice (Charles Brown) Freeny-Brown; 20 grandchildren and a host of great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, great-great-great-grandchildren and her extended family throughout East Texas and her church families.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Aaron-Boy Freeney; daughter, Dorothy Bell Freeney; 4 grandchildren; father, Charlie Alexander; mother, Cleavey Alexander and brothers and sisters, James L. Alexander, Rena Fay Alexander and Theron Alexander.
