Hazel loved canning and preparing a good meal with the vegetables she grew in her garden. She loved to entertain and would include everyone including their pets. Above all else, Hazel loved her family and grandchildren, some who called her "The Great One."

Hazel is survived by her children, Jeffery Pleis, Ronald (Felecia) Pleis, Rosalee Pleis, Charlotte (Jerry) Hartley, and Gloria (David) Tarket; eight grandchildren, Alan (Kayla) Hartley, Daniel Hartley (Jamie Warnken), Carolyn Thomas, Chris (Macy) Pleis, Nick (Tish) Pleis, Alecia Walls-Barton (Alex Barton), Jill (Thomas) Caranese, and Ryan Tarket (Tristan Cassilwatts); eight great-grandchildren with two on the way, Gloria Hartley, George Hartley, Payge Hartley, Connor Hartley, Dakota Thomas, Emerson Pleis, Ethan Pleis, Monroe Pleis, Leonardo Caranese, and Sebastian Caranese; and a host of nieces and nephews.
