Irene M. Johnston, devoted mother and grandmother, died January 24, 2020, in Aurora, Colorado.
Irene was born at home near New Effington, South Dakota, in 1922 on Halloween. She was the youngest of thirteen children of Roberts County homesteader Ole Jacob Pederson and his wife Anne Johnson. Her years growing up on the family farm were joyously filled with strong faith, music, laughter and hard work.
She married William G. Johnston in 1945 at Nideros Lutheran Church in Hammer, South Dakota. They set down roots in Lombard, Illinois, and raised three sons. She helped shepherd her four youngest grandchildren from birth through their early years in Elburn, Illinois, and later moved to Colorado in 2002.
Irene will be remembered for her wonderful sense of humor and laughter, and her South Dakota grit.
She was predeceased by her parents; her husband; her son Brian; and all of her siblings and their spouses. Irene is survived by her devoted sons Warren (Susan) of Colorado and Gary (Gretchen) of Illinois; cherished grandchildren Benjamin, Matthew, Cory, Amanda, Ryan and Sean; and many dear nieces and nephews and their families.
Irene will be interred beside her husband and his parents at Fairview Memorial Park in North Lake, Illinois.
