Jack Lee Westover

February 4, 1929 — May 5, 2021

Jack Lee Fowles Westover, 92, of Aurora, Colorado, passed away Wednesday, May 5, 2021 at his home. He was born February 4, 1929 in Standardville, Utah to Udell Wesley Fowles and Daphne Cook Fowles.

When Jack was just a year old, his father passed away. His mother married Eldon Westover in 1932, and he was known as Jack Westover for the remainder of his life.

Jack spent his growing up years in Huntington, Ferron and Pleasant Grove, Utah. He graduated from Pleasant Grove High School, then attended Brigham Young University before heading to Northwestern University in Chicago for Dental School. In 1951 he married Margaret Elaine Olpin and they spent two more years in Chicago where he graduated in 1953. Later that year, they made the move to Aurora, Colorado where Jack was stationed at Lowry Air Force Base. After completing his military service, Jack practiced dentistry in Aurora for many years before retiring in 1987.

Jack was a compassionate man who quietly dedicated his life to loving those around him and to serving God. Never one to need to be in the spotlight, Jack nevertheless touched so many lives. His family remembers him as kind and loyal to the people closest to him. He made each of his children and grandchildren feel special, always greeting them with warmth and love, an affectionate nickname, or a funny wisecrack.

Jack's preferred way to show love seemed to be by sharing food and he was known to offer up a whole list of possible eating options ("Would you like a slice of pie? How about some watermelon?") when family and friends came to visit. One of his unique favorites was stale donuts. Because his family struggled through the Great Depression, Jack remained frugal throughout his life (hence the stale donuts—they are cheaper if you buy them a day or two old).

Jack loved to play Rummikub and card games, to go on cruises (over 30!) with his wife Elaine and their friends, to play golf, to watch football, and in his younger years, he was quite the all-around athlete (football, basketball, track).

Since her passing 18 months ago, Jack has missed his wife, Elaine, terribly, and though we mourn the loss of our beloved father and grandfather, we are comforted knowing he is with her again. His love remains in our hearts and we will always remember and try to live by a favorite saying of his, to "stay happy".

Jack is survived by his children, Michael Westover, Jacqueline (Paul) Allen, Eric Westover, and Lewis (Kelly) Westover. He is also survived by thirteen grandchildren and twenty-two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Udell Fowles and Daphne Fowles Westover; adopted father, Eldon Westover; wife, Elaine; son, Steven; daughter-in-law, Sally Westover and great-granddaughter, Paetyn Allen.

Funeral services will be held Monday, May 17th, 11:00 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 740 Hudson Street, Denver, Colorado. Friends and family may attend a viewing Monday morning at the church from 10:00 a.m. – 10:45 a.m. prior to the funeral service. Interment will be at Fort Logan National Cemetery.
