James R. Byrd, was born to William R. and Selena Chapman Byrd, in Huntington, West Virginia on February 4,1930, and passed away on August 26,2002 at the age of 72.He attended Marshall College in West Virginia and lettered in track on the cross country team. He served his country with distinction in the U.S. Navy overseas during the Korean War.After his military service, he became a Denver Police Officer.James obtained his private pilots license and loved flying. He was an avid fisherman and read extensively. James is survived by Elaine, his beloved wife of over 50 years and by his sons Rick, and his wife Leslie and Jerry and his wife Jackie. He is also survived by his four Byrd grandchildren, Jordan, Emily,James K. and Jerilyn. James is further survived by brothers Les and Ed and sisters Rosa Mae Porter and Lorene Grazier, five sisters in law Marilyn Womick, Grace Byrd, Lorene Byrd, Lucille Byrd and JoAnne Byrd, one brother in law Clay Grazier and numerous nieces and nephews. James was preceded in death by his parents and brothers A.C.,Keith and Kermit and by his sister Virginia Meals. Funeral services Thursday, 11:30am, South Sheridan Baptist Church(of which James was a long time member and former Deacon),875 So. Sheridan Blvd. Interment will be at Ft. Logan National Cemetery, 1:00pm, staging area
