James Michael Clarkson 1938 – 2018
79 of Littleton, passed peacefully at home hospice on Tuesday, February 13, 2018, surrounded by family. He passed from late-stage, interstitial lung disease, an affliction from which he suffered since 2011.
He joins his wife, Honora, and mother, Mildred Clarkson, in Heaven. He is survived by his loving family: son, Michael J. (Julie A. Fioravanti) Clarkson; brother Vincent Clarkson (Denver, Colorado).
James was a proud U.S. Marine, who served for two years and attained the rank of Corporal before going to work in the private sector and later with the Federal Government – though his love of the Marines compelled him to explore returning to the Marines in later years to serve his country.
James had one true love, his wife, Honora. He wrote on her anniversary card, after she battled her 3rd bout of breast cancer, "It's been a wonderful journey and the journey continues." His love for her never wavered – resulting in countless stories after her passing which all started with, "Remember when your mother…". Even in his final days, his first thoughts were of Honora. Though Earthly ties separated them, their hearts remained together.
The other true love he had was for his dog, Zuzu, who came into his life as a stray, but never left his side through his final passing. James' compassion for dogs resulted in his being profiled in a story on Denver's Channel 4 in the 1970s as a postal carrier that actually gets along with dogs. He was truly a dog-whisperer in his own right, also befriending Ms. Fioravanti's dogs – Sasha and Carlie – who also remained at his bedside through his passing.
His second loves included searching for the Lost Dutchman Mine, visiting the Crazy Horse Monument and Maine, and reading up on his beloved Marines' latest news and goings-on.
Now, he is relieved of his suffering. As one family friend stated, "He passed on February 13th, so he could be with his one true love again on Valentine's Day." Truer words have never been spoken.
As James stated on that anniversary card, "The journey continues…".
A private interment will be held with Military Honors at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver on March 13, 2018. The event is to be limited to immediate family.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation or Marine Corps Toys for Tots.
