James Joseph Gencarella, Jr., 89, of Denver, passed away on 16 May 2019.
He was born on 24 October 1929 in Westerly, Rhode Island, the son of James and Beatrice (Serra) Gencarella. He graduated from high school in Westerly Rhode Island and joined the Air Force in April 1948 following graduation. While stationed in Germany, James married Katherina Bahan on 29 Sep 1952 in Munich, Germany. As a USAF Air Policeman, he participated in the historic "Berlin Airlift" operation.
James was honorably discharged from the United States Air Force following over 24 years of active military service. During his time serving his country, James was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for his service during the Vietnam Conflict. He also earned many Commendations and various Achievement Medals for outstanding service as a Supply Logistics Superintendent and Air Education Training Command Instructor.
After retiring from the USAF, he later attended Metropolitan State College earning his Bachelor's Degree in Political Science. James was an avid coin collector and he loved reading and spending time in his garden and discussing current politics and military history with his Son-in-Law.
James is survived by his daughter, Stephana M., son-in-law Gregg W. Fox; two grandchildren, Steven and Isabella Fox; brother, Joseph Gencarella; and three sisters, Carolyn Gencarella, Catherine Gencarella, and Barbara. He is preceded in death by his father, James Gencarella, Sr.; mother, Beatrice Gencarella; wife, Katherina Gencarella; and brother, Eddie Gencarella.
