Joel Leon Paul Azoulay

Longtime Thornton resident Joel L.P. Azoulay, died on Saturday, October 16, 2021, peacefully at home. Cremation has taken place and a public service will be held on October 30, 2021, at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Paonia, Colorado.
He was born in Gilman, CO to Lionel and Louise Azoulay on February 20, 1948. He was a first generation American, with his parents arriving in the US one month before he was born. He attended high school in Basalt, CO then enlisted in the Army as a combat engineer and demolition specialist. He received an honorable discharge as an E5 Sergeant and served two tours during the Viet Nam war. He then graduated from Fort Lewis College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Accounting and Business Administration. He went on to manage the local City Market in El Jebel for 20 years, owned several small businesses then became a long-haul truck driver for the next 15 years.
He loved the outdoors and spent his childhood camping and big game hunting, which he then taught his children and grandchildren. He enjoyed spending time at Lake Powell fishing and boating and teaching his grandchildren how to fish and shoot a rifle. He enjoyed reading, his favorites books being non-fiction history and true crime. He raced cars during his time in college and enjoyed attending races at Bandimere Speedway or watching drag racing and NASCAR on tv. He was bilingual with French being his first language, then learning English when he started elementary school.
Joel is survived by his mother Louise Azoulay of Hotchkiss, CO; two daughters, Monica and her husband Gary Connolly of San Antonio, TX; Aimee and her husband Bryan Wilkens of Aurora, CO; their mother, Patricia Azoulay (Stanberry)of Aurora, CO, and one son, Joel Azoulay Jr. of Denver, CO; sisters Denise Sparkman of Basalt, CO and Cathy Shanteau of Hotckhiss, CO. Joel is survived by three grandchildren: Aurora Guzman of San Antonio, TX, Nathaniel Connolly of San Antonio, TX, and Gavyn Wilkens of Aurora, CO, a great grandson Israel Guzman of San Antonio, TX and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his father, Lionel Azoulay, and his grandson Michael Connolly.
