Joseph LaRocque of Lakewood passed away on Monday, December 23, 2013. He was 82.
Born in Grand Rapids, MI, Joe eventually moved to Charlevoix and Saginaw, before relocating to Lake Charles, LA in 1943. There he attended LaGrange High School where he was an honored member of the speech team and sang in the quartet/octet.
Soon, Joe returned to Michigan to attend Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo. After two years he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. During the four years of duty, he attended the Russian Language School in Monterey, CA, then spent the rest of his tour in Germany. Loving to travel, Joe took advantage of his leaves by visiting many areas including the Scandinavian countries, and Cortina, Italy for the 1956 Winter Olympics.
Back home, Joe finished his degree in Geography at Western Michigan before attending Ohio State University for graduate studies.
He eventually made his way back to Colorado to work with the U.S. Forest Service in surveying and mapping where he met his wife, Carol. After getting married, the new couple packed up and moved to New Britain, CT to begin his career with the New Britain City Planning Department. Later he moved on to the State of Connecticut Planning Department.
Colorado soon pulled him back, however, as he returned to Pueblo, and finally Lakewood. He spent the next years of his life working for Prudential Insurance before retiring from the Jefferson County Planning and Zoning Department in 1996.
In retirement, Joe volunteered for the Honor Guard at Fort Logan. He eventually served as the Commander of Post 3471 in Morrison, CO.
Joe is survived by his wife Carol; daughter Gail; sons John (Ruth), Jamie (Kim) and Chris; brothers Leo (Irene), Louis (Gwen) and Francis (Peggy); six grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
