Joseph A. Wasiecko June 12, 1923 – June 17, 2018
Joseph Aloysius Wasiecko was born on June 12, 1923 to Peter and Mary Wasiecko in Broughton, PA, just outside of Pittsburgh. He was their 7 th son and 10 th child. Joe passed away five days after his 95th birthday on Fathers Day June 17, 2018. He is survived by his wife Mabel, five children - Mary Morgan, Linda (Bob) Grant, Sharon Wasiecko, Nancy (Kevin) Spurgeon and Steve (Lisa) Wasiecko, eleven grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and his younger sister Irene of NY. Joe grew up in the Pittsburgh area attending Carrick High School where he excelled in many sports. He entered the US Naval Air Force in 1941 and served until the end of WWII in 1945. He then attended the George Barr School of Umpiring in Florida and Colorado A&M (now Colorado State) in Fort Collins earning his degree in Education in 1950. There he met his wife of 66 years, Mabel Glantz. Joe taught in the Fort Collins Schools for three years before accepting a position with the Aurora Public Schools in 1954 at Aurora (Central) High School. In 1959 he moved into Administration becoming the District's first Athletic Director and remained in that position until 1982. Joe received his Master Degree from Denver University in 1972. During his 27 years with the Aurora School District, they grew from one high school to four before he retired in 1982. Joe was actively involved in the Aurora community where he officiated football and other sports, coached, founded the Aurora Relays and was instrumental in the creation of the Aurora Soccer Club in 1967. He was long term member of the Aurora Civitan Club where he volunteered supporting handicapped children's programs and the Special Olympics. He operated the concessions for Aurora's three swimming pools (Del Mar, Moorhead and Parklane) from 1958 until 1971. Joe loved and enjoyed his 11 grandchildren and attended ball games, gymnastics events and took them fishing. He was an avid golfer and played volleyball several times a week into his seventies. Joe actively worked out and swam daily into his late eighties. In 1997, Joe and Mabel moved to Westminster where he worked as a golf course Courtesy Ranger at Thorncreek Golf Course. He enjoyed working in his yard and living with his wife in their own home until September of 2017 when they moved to assisted living in Centennial.
A full military service will be held at Fort Logan Cemetery (400 W Kenyon Ave, Denver, CO) Pavilion "B" on Thursday, June 28th at 10:30 AM.
